OAB Blog Hop #2

February 20, 2013

So they have started a new tradition over at Open Adoption Bloggers, a Blog Hop where everyone can answer a quick question and then we all comment on each other’s posts.

hop

This blog hop is asking what our favorite quote is. For me that’s an easy one -

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

When I was in grad school I had to write a  thesis.  Each chapter of my thesis had a quote associated with it (I figured having fun and interesting quotes would break up what could be a boring 80 page paper).  When searching for quotes, I found this quote and it seemed to sum up why I was writing on the thesis topic that I had chosen (I was writing about sustainability in my industry which at the time was a subject that no one wanted to deal with). Since then I have often thought back to this quote when I begin to doubt myself.  It’s not even with large things either, but any time I feel like I’m a lone voice, that I’m speaking about any topic that no one else seems to care about, I remember this and think about the fact that a movement can be started by one person deciding to move.

I encourage you all to go over to the Blog Hop and see what everyone else is saying.

Oh, I like that one. You’re right, it’s inspiring.

I’ve only just barely heard this quote. I remember thinking, “That is so true.” But then the opposite kind of scares me… that a handful of terrible people can accomplish so much evil.

    So true and so inspiring!

What a good quote! This matches with the thoughts I’ve had as I’ve read the discussions on some open adoption blogs about opening up original birth certificates. I think that discussions like those that happen on these blogs are going to be one of the main pintles on which public opinion spins. The more that concerned people talk (intelligently, rationally, respectfully) about injustices, the more likely that the idea will seep into public consciousness and eventually become the norm. At least, I hope so!
